One of the oldest settlements in South Carolina, Edisto Island offers the kind of beach vacation that is perfect for nature lovers and beachcombers looking for peace and quiet.
The remote barrier island welcomes exploration: Several churches and plantations from the 1800s offer tours, and families can rent bikes for a ride through Edisto Beach State Park, which includes a salt marsh and a maritime forest with a nature trail and visitor's center.
Activities are simple and laid-back and usually revolve around lounging and playing on the long stretches of sandy beach. Children delight in lazy days spent building sand castles and hunting for shells on the beach.
You can also catch your own seafood by surf casting, shrimping, or deep-sea fishing. Dolphins are regularly seen feeding off the coast. Nesting sea turtles lay their eggs from May through October on the island.
