The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site
is located in his hometown of
Plains, Georgia.

The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site is dedicated as much to the thirty-ninth President as it is to the rural southern community that he was born and raised in and still calls home. The residents of Carter's hometown were a bit surprised that one of their own would seek the presidency: "It was a little shocking that someone we knew wanted to be President, but if Jimmy wanted to be President, why not?" said Mrs. Maxine Reese, campaign manager at the headquarters in town.

Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924. He went to school and began his political career here. The historic site, established in 1988, includes some of the town sites associated with the former President, including the hospital where the President was born, brother Billy's gas station, and the Plains High School, a combined elementary and secondary school that Carter attended for 11 years.

The Plains Railroad Depot, formerly Carter's presidential campaign headquarters, serves as the visitor center. It contains photographs and a video on Carter's life and presidency. The Carter Boyhood Home and Farm, where Carter lived from age four until about 18, is three miles outside of Plains. Carter and his three younger siblings were brought up here with an appreciation for nature and a sense of responsibility cultivated by completing various assigned chores.
