Travelocity, the online travel website, has just given the green traveling masses a reason to start planning another trip. They've launched an offshoot of their site called the Green Travel Directory, and it may be one of the most comprehensive resources for the environmentally-minded traveler out there.
There's a surprising dearth of effective green travel sites, and finding a reliable one could make greening on the go a lot easier. And the Green Directory may just be that reliable site we've all been waiting for—it's still in the early stages of development, but so far so good.
The site can direct you to Energy Star approved hotels around the world (those that use 40 percent less electricity and produce 35 percent less carbon emissions than average hotels), point you eco-friendly destinations (currently featured: Portland, Oregon), and help you utilize carbon offset resources and follow green travel tips during your journey.
You'll find a sprawling list of international hotels (and 200 more are reportedly being added over the next few weeks) and links to booking info on Travelocity's database. As of now, the user interface is a little clunky, and the actual amount of in-depth green info is pretty limited. And curiously, there's no link from the Travelocity main page to the Green Directory yet, so there's no way for the uninitiated to discover green options. "Yet" is the key word here, as we've been in touch with the folks behind the Directory, and we're confident it'll emerge as a great green resource to help jetsetters travel responsibly.
It's a great start?maybe the best out there so far—and still has plenty of useful info. So go ahead, green traveler, and check Travelocity's Green Directory before you plan your next trip.
